25A Bus Service

The 25A bus service, as well as the Dial-A-Ride service in our region, is potentially under threat as Oxfordshire County Council seek to review the subsidies currently in place in order to help with the savings they need to make to compensate for central government cuts in funding.

You can view the proposals and have an opportunity to respond on the website www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/stconsultation

  • Subsidised buses – Withdrawing bus subsidies altogether (Option 1)
  • Subsidised buses – Reducing funding to subsidised bus services – and adopting the principle of prioritising, where possible, services most likely to be used by the elderly and disabled (Option 2)
  • Dial-a-Ride – Ending direct funding of the Dial-a-Ride service – encouraging community transport groups across the county to deliver a replacement service.

You can read a copy of the consultation document online at www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/stconsultation or pick up a copy at an Oxfordshire County Council library.

There are two sections within the consultation document which refers to the 25A bus route:-

Annex X (option 1) provides a table of all subsidised bus services which would stop receiving a subsidy under this option.  25A is listed in this table.  The consultation document states: “If we withdraw all bus subsidies, it does not necessarily mean that all subsidised routes, stops or times will automatically cease being provided (although inevitably there will be an impact). We will work with bus operators to encourage them to continue providing subsidised services on a purely commercial basis i.e. without receiving any public funding. We will also work with the community transport sector in Oxfordshire to help them to meet gaps in the commercial transport network, including providing them with funding to get schemes going.”

Annex Z (option 2) – Reducing funding to subsidised bus services – and adopting the principle of prioritising , where possible, services most likely to be used by the elderly and disabled.  The consultation document states: “The 25A should be considered as having medium-low risk level under Option 2 (predicted). It was not initially treated separately from the 25, and therefore does not have its own rank. It is under review.”
